How it works

    At the moment of capture

    The Timesnap camera stamps the time from the internet (not the phone's clock) and the place. It lays a grid of about 50,000 tiny squares over the photo and records each square's brightness and colour.

    Locked away

    That fingerprint is stored with the photo's record on our servers, where nobody can change it, not even the photographer. The code on the photo names the record.

    Checked square by square

    A copy is compared with its fingerprint square by square. Resizing and compression are allowed for. Any real change (AI, retouching, a pasted object, a changed number) shows up in red.

Private and secure by design

  • Exact originals are proven by their fingerprint: with a code, only the fingerprint is sent, never the file.
  • Copies are compared on our checker and never stored or logged.
  • This checking page has no trackers, no ads and no third-party scripts. Every library is served from this site.
  • No keys or secrets in the page. It can only talk to Timesnap's rate-limited checker and the map servers.
