The quick way: in your browser

  1. Open Sign PDF and drop your PDF on the page. It opens on your device and isn't uploaded.
  2. Create your signature: draw it with a finger, mouse or pen, type your name in a handwriting style, or upload a photo of your signature on paper (the white background is removed).
  3. Drag the signature into place and resize it. Add your initials, today's date or ticks if the form needs them.
  4. Press Save PDF and download the signed copy.

This works the same on Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone and iPad.

Open Sign PDF

On iPhone or iPad

Open the PDF in the Files app or in Mail, tap the Markup button (the pen), then the + button and Add Signature. Draw it once and it's kept for next time. Drag it into place and tap Done.

On a Mac

Open the PDF in Preview, show the Markup toolbar (View › Show Markup Toolbar), and click the Sign button. You can sign on the trackpad, or hold a signature on white paper up to the camera. Click the signature to place it.

On Android and Windows

Neither has signing built in everywhere, but Sign PDF works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or any current browser. If you prefer an app, Adobe Acrobat Reader's free Fill & Sign also works.

Is an electronic signature legally valid?

For most everyday documents, such as contracts, consent forms, tenancy agreements, delivery notes and invoices, yes, in most countries. In the UK, electronic signatures are recognised in law and generally accepted by the courts; the EU has the eIDAS Regulation and the US has the ESIGN Act.

Some documents still need a signature on paper, witnesses or a certificate-based digital signature: wills, for example, and some property deeds and official forms. If you're not sure, ask whoever asked you to sign. A signature added with these tools is a picture of your signature, which is what most people mean by "sign and return", but it isn't a certificate-based digital signature.

Keep your signature safe

  • Prefer tools that don't upload your document or signature. Sign PDF works entirely on your device and forgets your signature when you close the tab.
  • After signing, consider locking the PDF so it can't be changed.
  • Don't leave pictures of your signature lying around in shared folders.
